Goat Rearing Programme
Goal: This programme aims to help the Islamic boarding school called ‘Pesantren’ become self-sufficient and provides them with the goat rearing skills they need as well as with their business plan strategy
Location: Kursiya Pesantren, Bogor, Indonesia
Duration of Program: 12 months
Total budget £5,500
First term: £3,300
Second term: £2,200
The Background
Kursiya Pesantren has been providing free education for orphans and underprivileged children since the establishment in 1991. There are currently 250 primary and 400 secondary school pupils enrolled. However, starting from 2018, the school has been having operational cost issues due to there being a higher demand for children who need support coming from communities surrounding areas. As a result, the school started introducing a small fee to the pupils. This narrows pesantren’s outreach in providing education for the community. The school committees had to come up with an alternative solution to prevent the fees from increasing over time. In 2017, they started to develop a Pesantren-based business.
Proposed Solution
A system called ‘One Pesantren One Product’ focuses on trying to solve this issue. The Pesantren is encouraged to have visible products that can be marketed to meet their operational needs. Products of interest are integrated farming products.
Data obtained by the Ministry of Agriculture shows that Indonesia currently does not meet the national demands of meat domestically. With this fact, Kursiya Pesantren has initiated a couple of business units, one of which is goat rearing.
The goat and sheep rearing business has good prospects in this region. The need for Qurbani animals increases every year by 10%. Aqiqah business has also grown by 10-12%, which further adds to the need for meat.
Having this programme will help the Pesantren to keep up with its operational costs as well as teach pupils new skills as they will also get involved in looking after the livestock.
Our Response
With your support, Human Aid Initiatives has started to launch the ‘Goat Rearing Pilot Project’ as part of our Community Empowerment Project (CEP). We reach out a helping hand to pesantren’s like Kursiya, to achieve their goal and offer a solution for the challenge they have. Our twelve months of activity frameworks include:
– To increase the capacity of administrators in goat rearing management such as coaching for animal feed production, livestock hygiene and pens, waste treatment and disease management
– To provide the infrastructure of goat rearings such as the distribution of 20 baby goats and their food
– To increase the capacity of management by providing them with a business plan workshop, financial management coaching and mentoring
