Ramadan 2024: Fidyah
“And as for those who can fast with difficulty, they have to feed a poor person” – Al-Qur’an 2:184
What is Fidyah?
In Islam, Fidyah is a donation of money or food to help those in need. This form of donation is made when someone cannot fast for the required number of days and will not be able to make these up. To make up for these missed days, they can donate to charity. Ramadan is a time of giving, so donations such as these are valued even more so during the month.
Who donates Fidyah?
You are able to pay Fidyah if you have missed or are exempt from fasting due to old age, pregnancy, illness or any other reason in which you are unable to make up the fasts up later.
Who can receive Fidyah?
Fidyah is to be given only to the poor and needy, not to everyone. Similar to Zakat, those entitled to receive Fidyah are regarded as being among those who are entitled to zakat.
How much Fidyah to donate?
£5 per fast missed or £150 if you are unable to do the entire month (30 days).
